Atty. Lorna Patajo-Kapunan graduated from the University of the Philippines AB Political Science (1973) and LLB (Law) 1978 and had seminar courses in Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation (JIII) Tokyo (1997); World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) Asian Region, Taejon Republic of Korea, (November 1998); National Institute of Humanitarian Law, San Remo Italy (September 2005); Summer Course International Humanitarian Law, Magdalene College, Cambridge University, London UK (July 2010). She founded in 2011 the Kapunan & Castillo Law Offices where she is currently Senior Partner. Although recognized as one of the leading litigation lawyers in the country because of her high profile cases, her legal expertise is extensive and includes licensing law, franchising, corporate and commercial law, joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, international humanitarian law, criminal law, family law, estate law and succession.
Atty. Kapunan started her distinguished career in law with Angara Abello Concepcion Regala and Cruz (ACCRA) where she was a senior associate until 1986. She was Senior Partner of Roco Buñag Kapunan Migallos Perez & Luna Law Offices from 1986. She was Founder and a Senior Partner of the Kapunan Lotilla Garcia & Castillo Law Offices from 2009-2011. Her Firm owns the distinction of being the first and only law firm to have been conferred the Institutional Spirituality Quotient (ISQ) Award by the Bishops/Businessmen Conference (BBC-June 2008), and is the sole Philippine member of the International Lawyers Network (ILN).
Attorney Kapunan has a number of professional involvements throughout her legal career. Atty. Kapunan was Bar Examiner in 1988 in Commercial Law. She was a professional lecturer at the European-based International Center for Legal Studies and was a lecturer of various subjects including “Media and the Client” “Family Law”, “Code of Professional Responsibility” for the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) required by the Philippine Supreme Court. She is a sought after Speaker on her various advocacies among them: Women and Childrens Rights, Domestic Violence, Safe Space Law, Climate Change and Environment, Cyber Bullying, Intersectionality Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity in the Workplace; Public Officers and Accountability, International Humanitarian Law (IHL), Intellectual Property Law, among others.
Atty Kapunan sits in Boards of major corporate clients as Corporate Secretary and Director and is involved in various socio-civic groups. She was Governor of the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) and is currently Counselor and Legal Adviser, representing the PRC at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) IHL Conferences. She was Vice Chairman and Trustee of Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), Past President Rotary Club of Sampaguita and past District Legal Adviser Rotary District 3800, Past President and Area Director of Zonta Foundation Area 5, Past Trustee of Rustan’s Essenses Foundation, Past President Stop Trafficking of Filipinos, Advisory Board World Wildlife Fund (WWF),Trustee/Legal Adviser, Ballet Philippines, and a volunteer of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
Atty. Kapunan is the daughter of Retired Supreme Court Justice Lino M. Patajo and Cristeta Taaca Patajo, Past Dean of Manila Doctors School of Nursing and VP Academic Affairs UDMC and member Professional Regulations Board for Nursing. She is the widow of former RTC Judge Eduardo Roden E. Kapunan, her Classmate in UP Law School. She has five sons, three grandsons. Two of her sons (Lino and Choi) and a grandson, Kyle Linus, are lawyers. Her eldest son, Lino, is now Managing Partner in her Law Firm.
Atty. Kapunan is an advocate for Womens and Childrens Rights, the Environment and Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity (DEI) in the workplace. She has the distinction of being the first to have obtained a Writ of Kalikasan from the Supreme Court for her West Tower/Barangay Bangkal oil spill case. She is Legal Counsel of Kilusang Makabansang Ekonomiya (KME) which advocates economic nationalism and champions the fight against poverty and corruption in all branches of the Government. She also is an advocate for the protection of equity/royalty rights of artists, performers, broadcasters – which has gained her the reputation of being a “lawyer for the celebrities.”
Atty. Kapunan has been a practicing lawyer for 47 years. She has been recognized among the Top 100 Lawyers of the Country for three consecutive years (2019-2021), and recently awarded the global “Women In Law Awards” for Corporate Law-Philippines, “Asias’ Iconic Award for Law” and ”Linguistic Intelligence Award” (2024). Atty. Kapunan is the “2025 Philippine Choice Award for Outstanding Humanitarian Service.” She is a recipient of “Asia’s Legacy of Justice and Legal Excellence Award” of the 2nd Asia’s Golden Legacy Award 2025. Atty. Kapunan has been nominated under the Asian Leaders Award 2025 for the “Women of Substance Award.” She recently received the First Tala Award of the Global Artistic Collaboration for Empowerment (GACCE–USA) and The ASEAN Women Best Entrepreneur Award (2024). She is an awardee of The Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service (TOWNS) in 1995 in the field of Corporate Law. She was recognized as an Outstanding Women of the University of the Philippines (1998). In 2016, Atty. Kapunan received the Global Filipina Women Leaders Network (FWN100) Awards. She is a distinguished member of the Pi Gamma Mu International Honors Society.
Atty. Kapunan was a TV Host of the weekly TV program ”Legally Speaking” in DZRJ TV Station and was also a co host in DZRH. She was a former columnist for Business Mirror. She is now co host of a weekly telleradyo program ”Laban Para Sa Karapatan” aired every Saturday 11-12 noon in Aliw23 TV, DWIZ 882, FB Live and You Tube. She has joined the number one rating popular daily program “FACE 2 FACE” as one of the “trio tagapagpayo” in TV 5 and One PH. She is frequently invited to talk shows, and conferences as guest speaker or resource person on current legal and political issues especially on women empowerment, environment, arts and culture, accountability of public officers, DEI and LGBTQ+ rights.
